The three-season sleeping bag that does four

I spent a long time looking for a winter bag before admitting that most of my cold nights were marginal, not arctic. A good three-season bag with a liner covers almost everything I actually do.

A silk liner adds a few degrees and keeps the bag clean. A lightweight down jacket worn inside adds a few more. On the two genuinely cold nights a year I rent a warmer bag.

The money saved went on a better sleeping mat, which turned out to matter far more for warmth than the last few degrees of bag rating.
